Colgate and our people everywhere contribute to organizations by providing financial support, donating products and volunteering time and expertise. Through our global giving we strive to develop innovative solutions to global and local challenges while living Colgate's values of Caring, Global Teamwork and Continuous Improvement.
Involving Colgate People
To recognize volunteer efforts by Colgate people in the United States, the Company introduced Colgate CARES Grants in 2003. Colgate gives financial assistance directly to eligible organizations where employees donate their time. Colgate's Matching Gift Program in the United States adds to employees' personal donations to community programs. Colgate matches as much as double the amount of the employee donation to eligible institutions. In 2009 alone, the Company matched over $750,000 of employees' contributions.
Colgate employees around the world volunteer their time to enhance the lives of those in our communities.
In Cambodia, Colgate employees volunteered with the Tabitha Foundation to build homes in a local village with materials provided for by funds donated from Colgate. Tabitha selects families who previously had no shelter to receive the homes constructed by Colgate volunteers. All residents are also accepted into Tabitha's life skills training program to continue to lift them out of poverty.
Colgate employees in Brazil volunteer with ClubEco Sorriso Herbal, a Colgate ecology club in which volunteers are trained in environmental responsibility and plant cultivation, and work with local school children on environmental conservation activities. ClubEco also maintains three seedling nurseries on Colgate grounds that produce 5,000 seedlings annually. Since 2001, the club has produced more than 30,000 seedlings.
Hill's Pet Nutrition's "Caring Hearts Committee" organizes volunteer activities such as Meals on Wheels for pets; Take Your Dog to Work Day; and teaching pet nutrition to prisoners who are training service dogs. Hill's Day of Caring, which began in 2002, allows teams of employees to volunteer together during paid working hours. Approximately 20 to 25% of Hill's Headquarters employees participate annually.
Supporting Communities During Disasters
We have also provided emergency financial aid to a number of natural disaster areas, including Germany, where there was severe flooding; the Philippines, where there were devastating fires; and the states of Colorado and California in the U.S., where there were wildfires.
To help the people of Haiti after the devastating 2010 Haiti earthquake, Colgate made contributions totaling over $130,000 to the American Red Cross, Partners in Health and the Pan American Health Organization. We donated over $500,000 in products to help those in need, and we also launched a matching gift program, which matched over $100,000 in employee contributions.
After Hurricane Katrina in the U.S., Colgate donated products as well as financial assistance. Hill's employees established a fund through a local community foundation to offer financial support to employees affected by Hurricane Katrina, approving grants for co-workers who lost so much during the storm.
Following the 2004 Asian Tsunami, Colgate employees in Thailand lent their support to the affected communities in many ways. Employees volunteered with the Bangkok Red Cross, coordinating efforts with dental professionals and hospitals to supply oral health care products and care. In 2005 Colgate held a volunteer day to engage with the students at the Rajaprajanugroh 35 School in Thailand's Phang-Nga Province, which had been demolished by the tsunami. Colgate has supported the school with financial support and employee involvement to develop the Colgate Library. Colgate employees, through a fundraising and book donation program, have donated books, learning equipment and money to the library.
